An expert-guided 3-day private tour from Munich to the fabulous but hard-to-reach Bavarian castles — featuring Herrenchiemsee, Innsbruck, Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, and the UNESCO Wieskirche.
This 3-day tour delivers the must-see highlights of our longer Bavarian tours in a perfectly paced itinerary that covers the greatest castles, the most stunning Alpine scenery, and a cross-border visit to the Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck. It is the ideal introduction to castles touring for travelers with limited time.
Day one begins with Munich hotel pickup and a drive to Lake Chiemsee, where a boat carries you to Herrenchiemsee Island — King Ludwig II's palace modeled after Versailles, his most expensive project, where he stayed only about one week. After exploring the New Palace, the Old Palace, and the Ludwig Museum, you continue south across the Austrian border to Innsbruck for an overnight stay.
Day two explores Innsbruck's medieval lanes, the famous little Golden Roof below the impressive Austrian Alps, the beautiful Baroque Church, and the Hofburg Palace. After lunch featuring authentic Austrian cuisine, you drive north to Neuschwanstein Castle — Germany's most famous castle, built between 1869 and 1876 — for an interior tour. The day ends with an overnight in Fussen, the old Roman town at the southern end of the Romantic Road.
Day three visits the Wieskirche, a stunning Rococo masterpiece built between 1745 and 1754 and one of the few buildings in Bavaria on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Then to Linderhof Palace, built between 1870 and 1879 in an elaborate Rococo style, with its formal gardens and famous Venus Grotto. The route passes through Oberammergau, the pretty village known for its Passion Play tradition since 1633, its Luftl paintings, woodcarvers, and the best Christmas shopping in Bavaria. Return to Munich by late afternoon.
Highlights
Your Journey
Three days, three of Europe's most extraordinary castles, and the Alpine scenery that connects them. This tour delivers the highlights of our longer Bavarian itineraries at a pace that's ambitious but never rushed — from Ludwig's Versailles on Lake Chiemsee to Innsbruck's medieval lanes to the fairy-tale towers of Neuschwanstein and the intimate beauty of Linderhof.
Day 2
Innsbruck's medieval lanes are compact and walkable — the Golden Roof glinting below snow-capped peaks, the Baroque Church echoing with centuries of worship, the Hofburg Palace carrying the weight of Habsburg history. After lunch with authentic Austrian cuisine, the drive north brings Neuschwanstein — Germany's most famous castle, its interior a testament to one king's boundless imagination. The evening settles into Füssen at the Romantic Road's southern end.
