A 3-day private tour from Munich exploring Herrenchiemsee on Bavaria's largest lake, the baroque jewel of Salzburg, and the dramatic Eagle's Nest or ancient salt mines of Berchtesgaden.
This 3-day itinerary takes you east from Munich into the spectacular lake and mountain country that straddles the Bavarian-Austrian border. Every day brings a completely different landscape and experience — from island palaces to Mozart's birthplace to Alpine peaks with wartime history.
Day one begins with a boat ride across Lake Chiemsee, Bavaria's largest lake, to Herrenchiemsee — King Ludwig II's most ambitious castle, built after a visit to Versailles and where he stayed only one week. After exploring the New Palace with its Hall of Mirrors, the Ludwig Museum, and the Old Palace, you continue by boat to Fraueninsel, one of the most beautiful places in Bavaria, home to an ancient Benedictine monastery. The day ends with a welcome dinner in Salzburg.
Day two is devoted entirely to Salzburg's baroque splendor. A walking tour reveals the Mirabell Gardens — a setting for The Sound of Music — followed by Getreidegasse, probably Europe's most beautiful shopping street, Mozart's Birthplace, the Cathedral, and Fortress Hohensalzburg reached by funicular. Afternoon options include Hellbrunn with its trick fountains ordered by one of Salzburg's bishops, Hohenwerfen Fortress with its 900-year history and falconry, or the Salzkammergut lake district.
Day three presents a choice: the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), a relic of a regime long gone but never forgotten, reached by a luxurious brass elevator through 400 feet of solid rock — or the Salt Mine Berchtesgaden, one of the oldest working salt mines in the world since 1517, where you dress in protective miner clothing, ride a train into the mountain, and slide down to a sparkling underground lake. Both options include the charming town of Berchtesgaden and the stunning Lake Konigsee before returning to Munich.
Highlights
Your Journey
This three-day tour packs an extraordinary amount into a short span — from a boat ride across Bavaria's largest lake to an island palace, through Salzburg's baroque perfection, and up to the Eagle's Nest with its panoramic Alpine views. It's the ideal introduction for travelers who want to test the waters before committing to a longer journey.
Day 2
Salzburg is Mozart's city, but it's also a baroque masterpiece in its own right. Mirabell Gardens glow in the morning light, Getreidegasse's iron shop signs line Europe's most beautiful shopping street, and Mozart's Birthplace sits modestly among them. The Cathedral and Fortress Hohensalzburg — reached by funicular — reveal the city's spiritual and military history. Afternoon options include Hellbrunn's trick fountains, Hohenwerfen's medieval falconry, or the Salzkammergut lakes.
