About Zugspitze
The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany, rising to 2,962 meters (9,718 feet) above the charming town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. On a clear day, the summit offers unobstructed 360-degree views across four countries: Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. It is, without question, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in all of the Alps.
Getting to the summit is an experience in itself. The Bayerische Zugspitzbahn — a historic cogwheel railway built in the 1920s — climbs through tunnels carved into the rock. The Eibsee cable car, one of the world's most impressive aerial tramways, ascends directly from the shores of the stunning turquoise Eibsee lake to the summit in just 10 minutes. Most visitors take one up and the other down for maximum variety.
At the summit, a panoramic terrace offers views of over 400 Alpine peaks. The Zugspitz glacier — one of the last remaining glaciers in Germany — lies just below. There are two summit restaurants, a chapel, and the famous golden summit cross. On the Austrian side, the Zugspitze Arena offers additional viewing platforms and, in winter, skiing across the border.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen itself is worth exploring. This twin town hosted the 1936 Winter Olympics and remains a hub for Alpine sports. The Partnach Gorge — a narrow canyon with waterfalls and dramatic rock formations — is one of Bavaria's most impressive natural wonders and lies just a short walk from the town center.
Our Zugspitze day tours from Munich include a scenic drive through the Alpine foothills, time at the Eibsee lake, the cable car or cogwheel train to the summit, and free time to explore Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It's a perfect contrast to our castle tours and showcases a completely different side of Bavaria.
Guide's Pick — Thomas
“Take the cogwheel train up and the cable car down. Everyone does it the other way around — but the train ride up builds anticipation, and the cable car descent gives you the dramatic reveal.”

Quick Answer
How do you get to the top of the Zugspitze?
Three ways: the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn cable car from Eibsee (10 minutes), the cogwheel train from Garmisch-Partenkirchen (75 minutes), or the Austrian Tiroler Zugspitzbahn from Ehrwald. A private tour from Munich takes 1.5 hours each way and includes all transport.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Two options: the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn cogwheel railway (scenic, about 75 minutes) or the Eibsee cable car (dramatic, 10 minutes). Most visitors take one up and the other down. Our tours include tickets for both.
Yes. The cable car and cogwheel train take you directly to the summit with no hiking required. The viewing platforms and restaurants at the top are fully accessible. It's suitable for all fitness levels and ages.
Late May through October offers the best visibility and warmest temperatures at the summit. Winter visits (December–April) offer skiing and a dramatic snow-covered landscape. The summit is open year-round, but clouds can obscure views any time of year.
